• Recommended: GitBook (2016) The Curious Journalist's Guide to Data.
• This is a free, open access textbook created by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University. It contains high-level discussions of quantifying, analyzing, and communicating data, emphasizing concepts over formulas.
• A PDF version of this book is available for free online.
• Recommended: Freedman, Pisani, Purves (2007) Statistics, 4th Edition.
• This book includes coverage of almost every topic that we are covering in class, so if you want an alternative account to read throughout the semester, you might want to obtain a copy.
• There are four editions of this book, with only small changes from one edition to the next. The fourth edition is expensive to buy, though you can rent it from Amazon for the semester for under $15. You may be able to buy a used copy of the second or third edition for about the same price.
• We are going to assign a small part of the fourth edition as assigned reading in class, but you will find that material in D2L so that you do not have to buy a copy of Freedman et al. for that purpose.
• Recommended: Spiegel & Stephens (2014) Schaum's Outline of Statistics, 5th Edition.
• This book has hundreds of worked-out examples that may be useful for practice.
• New copies of the book can be purchased for around $15.
